A Detailed Look at Dental Implant Surgery

For patients who are missing teeth, dental implants provide unparalleled stability, restoring form, function, and the appearance of their smile. At Elite Dental Care, we provide dental implant surgery and restoration at our Germantown, Trenton, and Jackson, TN, practice locations. Dr. Clint Buchanan and Dr. Mark Harper have performed many successful implant procedures using the most sophisticated techniques to minimize discomfort and expedite healing. We offer several types of implants, including traditional, mini, All-on-4®, and TeethXpress®, and we also offer oral conscious sedation to help you remain relaxed and comfortable throughout treatment.

An Introduction to Implant Dentistry

Traditional dental implants require two different surgeries, separated by four to six months of healing time. During the initial surgery, your dentist will place titanium posts in your jawbone to replicate tooth roots. Before the procedure, your dentist will administer anesthesia to make you comfortable and help minimize your pain. Throughout the surgery, your dentist will continue administering anesthesia in order to control any discomfort that may occur.

We offer several types of implants, and we also offer sedation to help you remain relaxed and comfortable throughout treatment.

Once in place, these posts can provide support for a dental crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture. The type of dental implant you choose and the health of your jawbone will determine how your dental implant surgery is performed.

During dental implant surgery, one or more titanium posts are directly inserted into the jaw bone.

What to Expect During Dental Implant Surgery

Your entire treatment plan will typically be completed over the course of several months with breaks in between to allow for proper healing. Because each patient heals differently, it could take longer. Phases of traditional implant treatment often include:

  • Extractions: Your dentist may need to clear the site, which involves removing the damaged tooth
  • Prerequisite Procedures: Patients may require bone grafting to build up and strengthen the jaw
  • Implant Placement: After your jawbone and gums have had time to heal and recover, the dentist will surgically insert the implant or implants into your jawbone
  • Healing Period: You will then go through another healing period known as osseointegration, which allows your jawbone to fuse with the titanium post
  • Attaching the Abutment: After healing is complete, your dentist will place the abutment (a connector) piece to the top of the implant
  • Implant Restoration: Finally, your dentist will place the crown, bridge, or denture to the abutment for fully restored function

Throughout the healing process, you may experience discomfort, swelling, bruising, and some minor bleeding. Your dentist will give you detailed after-care instructions to follow, such as medications to take, when to apply ice or cold packs, and foods to avoid.

I was really impressed! They were super nice and professional. They were very informative with each step of the process. They seemed to have a desire to go above and beyond.
